1978 Yamaha TT500 - the ultimate dirt machine - photos, specs

The wide-spread and enthusiastic rider acceptance of the TT-500 has exceeded all Yamaha expectations. Based on the Thumper 4-stroke, single machines that dominated off-road riding in the 50's, the TT500 incorporates modern engineering with classic engine design to create the ultimate dirt machine. The versatility and forgiving nature of the TT500 makes it a great machine for riders who want an off-road play bike, a desert racer, or a TT racer. Nearly any form of off-road riding is performed magnificantly by the TT500. No wonder man riders who left motorcycling have returned to the sport on a TT500. The 1978 TT500 engine is a single overhead cam, four-stroke single. It creates smooth, yet powerful torque even at low rpms. The camshaft and crankshaft run in ball bearings for longer life. The five-speed transmission distributes power over a broad range. The engine is mounted in a lightweight, modern motocross frame. There are also long travel forks, heavy duty wheels, and leading/trailing conical drum brakes. The TT500 also has nitrogen/oil, rear shocks, and upswept exhaust pipe for greater ground clearance and a wide aluminum skid plate for engine protection. In 1978 the TT500 is still the only completely modern big bore single off-road machine. The ultimate dirt bike.
