What's new from Honda? Big-Bore, Short-Stroke: The RPM Factory.
Honda pioneered its big-bore, short-stroke engine technology in their World Championship road racers which dominated the early and mid-1960's. The high rpm potential of this engine combination was very successful, and the incredible wail of those winning GP machines is something that few enthusiasts will ever forget.
The big-bore, short-stroke technology found in the new First Into The Future Hondas has much the same effect on engine performance today as it did for those early road racers.
With a wide bore comes a wide combustion chamber and greater flexibility in designing valve layout. More than the conventional two valves per cylinder can be used. This increased intake area permits greater engine efficiency, higher rpm and more horsepower.
Normally, more horsepower means more heat. The big-bore, short-stroke engine has the answer for that. Because a short-stroke engine's pistons travel less distance per revolution, piston speed is reduced. With lowered piston speed, there's less than normal heat build-up from friction at any given rpm, less piston wear and reduced piston fatigue from heat.
The short-stroke engine uses shorter connecting rods so it can be made lighter and more compact for positioning closer to the machine's center of gravity. The benefits here are a machine with lighter feel, one that's more responsive to rider input, and one that has increased cornering clearance without raising seat height.
The big-bore, short-stroke Honda engine: It revs higher, allows for multiple-valve head design, produces more power, is more compact for lighter feel and better handling, and increases cornering clearance without the need for increased seat height.
If this sounds like the engine of the future, you're probably right. Except that your Honda dealer has it today.
