Doug Richmond just recently completed a 4,637 mile bike trip from Ensenada, Mexico (near Tijuana), to San Jose, Costa Rica, and he didn't take the Inter-American Highway! He did it the hard way or, as Doug refers to it, the "interesting" way - along the unpaved roads, a few stretches of paved roads, a few stretches of paved roads with "chuckholes deep enough to drown a duck" and through "mud, rocks, loose gravel, sand, water, creeks - we hit 'em all!"
