1951 Belmont Stadium - World's fastest 1/4 Mile Dirt Track opens '51 season

An enthusiastic crowd of over 5000 fans turned out to cheer and thrill at the first race of the season in Belmont Stadium, 20 miles south of San Francisco...

Joe Leonard No. 98, a young newcomer, almost outrode Kenny Eggers and Larry Geadrick, national champs, and did it with ease.

Start of the Trophy Dash. Charlie West, one of the really hot boys at this track, gets out right now at the flash of the signal lights.

John Cross of Vallejo is cruising along blissfully unaware that the rider who is down is about to dump him too. The man down is also unaware that he is about to tangle with Cross' rear wheel. Just a close squeek that was caught by the speedlights.
