It was in 1885 that the first motorcycle powered by an internal combustion engine was conceived, built, and successfully ridden...built by Gottlieb Daimler in Canstatt, Germany during 1885...Daimler's motorcycle was patented on Auguste 29, 1885 and was described in the patent as a "Reitwagen", a literal translation of which is "saddlewagon" or "riding wagon"...this historic vehicle was unfortunately destroyed in a fire at the Daimler factory in 1903. Several exact replicas were made in 1906 by the factory apprentices and these are the vehicles whose pictures are seen today. These replicas are presently at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany, at the Zweirad Museum in Neckarsulm, Germany, at the Dentches Museum in Munich, Germany, and at Daimler's workshop in Canstatt...
